Renting a Car in Dubai This Winter (2026–27)

The short version

Dubai in winter is a different city from Dubai in August. The heat drops out of the day, the evenings turn pleasant, and for six weeks the whole place is running the Dubai Shopping Festival. That is also when most visitors land — which is why the sensible cars go first, and why sorting the paperwork before you arrive matters more than it does in the quiet months. This is a winter car rental guide written for that exact trip: renting a car in Dubai in winter, the festival weeks, the paperwork, and the car that fits.

This guide covers the three things tourists usually get wrong: the licence, the tolls, and the deposit. Then it walks through the winter calendar, and which kind of car actually fits which kind of trip.

Before you book: three things to sort

1. Your licence. Whether you need an International Driving Permit depends on where your licence was issued — some countries’ licences are accepted as they are, others are not, and rental desks will not bend on this at the counter. We wrote the country-by-country breakdown out in full in our IDP guide. Check it before you fly, not at the airport.

2. Salik tolls. Dubai’s toll gates are electronic — there is no booth, no ticket, nothing to pay at the gate. The tolls are added to your rental bill afterwards. How much a crossing costs, where the gates sit, and how the charge shows up are all in our Salik guide.

3. The deposit. Every Dubai rental holds a security deposit on your card. It is blocked, not charged, and with us it is released within 15 to 21 working days after the car comes back. The amount varies by car. The full explanation — what can delay a release, and what to check before you hand the keys back — is in our deposit guide.

Those three pages answer almost every question we get on WhatsApp in November. Read them once and the rest of this guide is just planning.

Who wrote this guide

We are SuperFastWheel, a Dubai Marina rental team. The advice here comes from the questions renters actually ask us on WhatsApp every November: licences, tolls, deposits, and which car survives a DSF week. Our fleet runs from AED 400 to AED 16,000 a day, delivery anywhere in Dubai is free, and cancellation is free anytime — the same terms quoted on every page of this site.

The winter calendar, in order

UAE National Day — 2–3 December 2026 (Wednesday–Thursday). A mid-week break, so residents take short trips and the roads out of town get busy. If your trip overlaps it, book the car for the whole break rather than trying to swap mid-week.

Dubai Shopping Festival — 4 December 2026 to 17 January 2027. The 32nd edition, 45 days, citywide. Malls stay open late, there are concerts and raffles, and the evenings around the big malls are the busiest driving of the season. A car rental during DSF earns its keep here: you can do two malls, a beach stop and dinner in one evening without queuing for taxis three times.

Beach Canteen — 10 to 27 December. New to DSF this year: a food-and-entertainment pop-up on the beach, with restaurants, live acts and workshops. It is a daytime-to-evening stop, and parking nearby fills up early — arrive before sunset if you can.

DSF Auto Season — 19 December 2026 to 17 January 2027 (dates published on Visit Dubai). This is the car part of the festival, and the reason this guide exists: a citywide celebration of cars, bikes and speed, running right through to the festival’s final day. If you are in Dubai for the cars, this is the window to be here for — and it is also when open-top and flagship cars are in highest demand, so book early.

MOTB (Market Outside The Box) — 8 to 24 January 2027, Dubai Design District (d3). An outdoor market with food, shopping and installations. Easy by car, and d3 is worth combining with a drive down the coast road on the same day.

New Year’s Eve — 31 December. The hardest driving night of the year. Fireworks bring road closures around the usual spots, and they are announced close to the day — do not plan a precise route for NYE in advance. Book the car, agree a pickup point away from the busiest areas, arrive early, and check the day’s official closures before you set off.

Which car for which winter plan

You do not need the fastest car in the fleet to enjoy Dubai in winter. You need the right shape for the trip you actually have planned.

Malls, dinners, beach days. A luxury SUV. Room for shopping bags and passengers, easy to park at a mall, comfortable for the long evening drives between districts. The Urus and the Bentayga are the two we get asked for most here — and both are among the first to go in December. The full fleet is on our cars page.

A Hatta weekend. Hatta is the mountain escape: a proper road trip out of the city, with a wadi hub, food pop-ups and an outdoor cinema during DSF. Take something with ground clearance and space, and check the car’s included kilometres before you go — every rental includes 250 km a day, and a Hatta round trip eats a good chunk of that. Extra kilometres are charged per car, so ask on WhatsApp before the trip, not after.

A night out, or a special occasion. This is what the convertibles are for. December and January evenings are the one time of year you will drive with the roof down every single night — which is why renting a convertible in Dubai in winter books out first. A convertible booked for a single evening costs the same planning as a week-long rental — book it as early as you would a restaurant on New Year’s Eve.

A family week. A big SUV or a luxury saloon, booked for the full week rather than day by day. Winter weeks fill up in blocks: families arrive, take a car for seven days, and the fleet does not free up until they leave.

On price, the honest position is the same as everywhere else on this site: our fleet runs from AED 400 to AED 16,000 a day depending on the car, and the exact rate for your dates is confirmed on WhatsApp before you book. There are no seasonal discounts to chase and no hidden add-ons — the rate you are quoted is the rate.

Driving notes for winter visitors

Rain is rare, but when it comes it comes suddenly, and Dubai’s roads get slick fast because the dust has nowhere to go. Slow down, double your following distance, and do not treat a wet desert road like a wet city road.

Desert trips need the right car and the right plan. A city saloon is not a desert car, and going off-road in a rental you have not cleared for it is the fastest way to lose a deposit. If a desert drive is on your list, tell us on WhatsApp first and we will point you to the cars that suit it.

And one practical point for DSF weeks: evenings and weekends are the peak. If you can shift a mall trip to a weekday morning, you will park in minutes and drive home in half the time.

FAQs

Is winter a good time to rent a car in Dubai?

Yes — it is the best time. Daytime temperatures are comfortable, evenings are made for driving, and the festival season means there is somewhere to drive to every night. It is also peak season, so the trade-off is demand: book earlier than you think you need to.

Do I need an international driving permit to rent a car in Dubai as a tourist?

It depends on the country that issued your licence. Some are accepted directly, others require an IDP alongside your home licence. The country-by-country list is in our IDP guide (linked above) — check yours before you travel.

How do Salik tolls work on a rental car?

The gates are electronic and the toll is added to your rental bill after the trip. There is nothing to pay at the roadside. Full details, gate locations and charges are in our Salik guide (linked above).

How much deposit do car rental companies in Dubai hold?

It varies by car. With us the deposit is blocked on your card, not charged, and released within 15 to 21 working days after return. Our deposit guide (linked above) explains what can hold a release up.

Is it better to rent a car during Dubai Shopping Festival or use taxis?

For a single short trip, a taxi is fine. For a festival evening — two malls, a beach stop, dinner — a rental wins: no queues, no surge, and you keep your shopping in the boot. On New Year’s Eve, a pre-booked car beats both.

Can I drive a rental car to Hatta from Dubai?

Yes, in a suitable car. Check your included 250 km a day against the round trip, and confirm extra-kilometre rates on WhatsApp before you go. Hatta’s DSF events make it a popular winter day trip, so leave early.

What happens if it rains in Dubai while I have a rental car?

Slow down and keep your distance — the first rain after dry weeks makes roads unusually slippery. It rarely lasts long. If conditions look serious, pull over somewhere safe and wait it out rather than pushing on.

What is the best car to rent in Dubai in winter?

It depends on the trip. A luxury SUV covers malls, beach days and a Hatta weekend; a convertible owns December and January evenings; a big SUV or saloon suits a family week. The car pages linked above name the models we get asked for most.

How far in advance should I book a rental car for the Dubai winter season?

For December and January, as early as you can — weeks, not days. Convertibles and flagship SUVs for the DSF Auto Season window (19 December to 17 January) go first. A message on WhatsApp costs nothing and holds nothing, but it tells you straight away whether your car is still available for your dates.

Book on WhatsApp: +971 56 709 2795 — tell us your dates and the kind of trip, and we will confirm the exact rate and availability. Free delivery anywhere in Dubai, free cancellation anytime.
